Just what makes someone a ‘prominent brother’ is an open question. Some would limit it to those who are truly famous in the world outside of Omega. Some would limit it to those who have served Omega over the years or to members of Omega’s Exalted Chapter.
We have taken the position that all of these brothers are worthy of mention. The list which follows includes all of those obviously famous; those who have achieved mention in Who’s Who in America; college professors and recognized scholars; school superintendents; generals and admirals in the military; especially prominent athletes and entertainers. Past Grand Princepses and members of the Exalted Chapter appear in separate lists. Many brothers meet the criteria in more than one category and appear on two or more lists. The primary list currently has 432 names.
Who’s Who in America (A. N. Marquis Publishers) is the standard guide to prominent (not necessarily famous) Americans and can be found in every public library. When it was established it worked on the assumption that one American in 10,000 merited inclusion. That figure increased to two in 10,000 between 1915 and 1960, then to three and in recent years to nearly four per 10,000. As Omega can identify some 12,000 members from 1902 to 2002, (plus an additional 2,000 who cannot be researched because their information is incomplete) the presumption would be that five brothers would be the maximum to be found in the book.
Not so. So far we have discovered 209 brothers in Who’s Who and its related volumes, despite the lack of a master index to the entire collection. The book tends to be under represented in the areas of sports and entertainment and to be ‘over represented’ in community service and leadership. Those selected for Who’s Who are the individuals whose influence will be most felt into the future. More striking is the number of brothers who appear in Who Was Who, which is limited to only the most important of those who appeared in Who’s Who. Our total is 56! Twenty-five of our members appear in the even more restrictive Who’s Who in the World.
Statistically analyzed, it turns out that Omega has approximately 40 times the national average for Who’s Who. Many of our chapters have even more. From a slightly better 44 times for Beta Chapter to 89 for Pi, 98 for Gamma and 100 for Alpha Epsilon. From 125 for Phi Rho Omega to 140 for Kappa, 154 for Alpha Upsilon, 157 for Alpha, 167 for Upsilon Zeta and topping out for an astronomical 231 for Beta Mu. While many of the highest figures are for small chapters and therefore less revealing, chapters like Alpha and Kappa have large membership rolls. There is no way that figures like these could be accidental.
Perhaps even more startling are the 86 brothers who have been professors at colleges and universities, way above the national average. Omega is not academic institution, but it is obvious that it does encourage intellectual development and achievement.
The wide distribution of our high achievers by chapter is also startling. Some 66 of the 86 chapters that functioned for more than one year include brothers on this list. While not all chapters have included men of great achievement, most have. Something about the organization’s traditions makes that occur. It is Omega’s belief that this much talent at the top is reflected in the quality of the average member as well. The average Omega will succeed far more than the average high school graduate.
Some assert that fraternities encourage risky behavior. In a sense we do. But, there is a difference between mere ‘risky behavior’ and ‘risk taking.’ Omega ultimately discourages the first with its negative, cliquish, anti-social and reckless connotations and promotes the second with all its potential for fostering individual achievement and a wholesome school climate. We know that those who march to the beat of a different drummer, who dream of what can be and who are willing to do and to risk, will become the movers and shakers of society. You cannot repress the adventurous spirit of youth without damaging its force for change. In intellectual terms this is the key component in the extraordinarily important ‘Theory of Scientific Revolution.’ Without risk takers, society makes no progress. Our undergraduate Omegas’ record of success in later life argues that something in our culture, our tradition and our vision has played a role in the imprint they have made on our society.
For those who join Omega, this list should also carry an important message: Omega Gamma Delta believes in quality. We select those we believe will succeed and we encourage them to develop their potential. Their charge is to make themselves part of that roll of achievement. Whether an undergraduate member’s success today is in the classroom, on the athletic field, or in the world of community service is less important than that he strives to achieve and grow. That is how he will make himself succeed in later life and that is the payment he renders to Omega for his opportunity to enjoy our fellowship!

(A few notes on the above are in order. Those names marked with H after their induction years were inducted as Honorary Members. Since Omega generally only elects men to Honorary Membership if they serve in actual advisory roles, we believe that including them in this list of members is appropriate. Some other names can be found where the induction dates are earlier than the founding date of the chapter. This is because these individuals were alumni of local fraternities who became members when their chapters joined Omega. In the past they have often been listed with the date their chapter was chartered, but this is often confusing. The most noticeable examples of this are in Kappa and Mu Chapters. There are also some men whose induction dates are not certain. The dates in these cases are the best estimates available.)
And More’
The process for establishing this list has been extremely complicated because of incomplete information on many members in our records, especially for the large percentage who cannot confirm their membership because they are already deceased. We work from confirmable birth dates, colleges attended and limited biographical information which has been in our files for many years. When the overwhelming mass of data supports the proposition, the name is added. Our general policy has been to exclude those whose membership is open to debate and only in circumstances where the probability was extremely high have they been included. This does leave us with the possibility we have included a few who were only ‘social members’ rather than properly initiated members. For both this list and the main list we have ignored issues such as those who left active membership before graduation on the basis of ‘Once an Omega, always an Omega.’ All of this has left us with a ‘working list’ of approximately 150 other individuals who may well have been members and some of who may be added to this list at a later date. The most following are those who presently look like the most probable additions:
