Dear Brothers, As members of the Class of 1985 the final year of our chapter in Oceanside NY, we submit the following report: In 1984-85 there were several fraternities operating out of Oceanside HS. Omega was a sports and academic Fraternity but there were other fraternities that at times acted very much gang like. For several years our Principal was being pressured by local police to disband fraternities due to trouble both on and off school grounds. As a result, the Superintendent of Schools sent out letters to all parents through out the school district stating that the schools new formal position on fraternities was now to treat all fraternities as gangs and the Principal will have the authority to expel all students who are fraternity members and/or fraternity pledges from school. He based his decision on the opinion that fraternities in general acted more like organized crime rather than an organization of teens playing sports, conducting community charitable work and bonding like brothers such as we did in Omega. However, out of respect to civilized fraternities (mostly to Omega) he would permit all fraternity’s to operate until the remainder of the school year to get their business in order under the condition they do not continue to operate into the next school year. We attended school board meetings and made countless attempts protesting this decision. We contacted the Grand Chapter President in Port Washington. He also made several attempts, to no avail. Finally, he directed us to finish up all organizational business and to return all records and history to him at school year end, which we did. As a final note we would like to recognize Brother Andrew Knipe in this report, as in our final year he was a strong advocate in our plight to remain active representing Omega at the school board. Brother Andy has since passed away from Lou Gehrigs disease. Brothers, we will always be proud of our membership in Omega and never forget its bonds of Brotherhood. Fraternally and respectfully submitted, Brothers of the Beta Gamma Chapter – Class of 1985 |
